Overview
What DALL·E 3 is
DALL·E 3 launched in 2023 as OpenAI's third-generation text-to-image model. Its main advance was stronger adherence to detailed natural-language prompts, aided by ChatGPT automatically expanding a user's idea into a more descriptive generation prompt.
The model is no longer the current OpenAI image system. OpenAI's developer catalog marks DALL·E 3 as deprecated and removed from the API. The company is also retiring the official DALL·E GPT from ChatGPT on August 30, 2026 and directs users to ChatGPT Images for ongoing creation and editing.
Existing articles, prompts, and creative workflows can still make DALL·E 3 relevant historically, but new products should not integrate against it. OpenAI recommends GPT Image 2, which supports both image input and output, higher-fidelity image inputs, flexible sizes, generation, and editing.
Teams migrating an older DALL·E 3 workflow should re-evaluate outputs instead of swapping model IDs and assuming identical behavior.
