Develop reference-led concepts and targeted variants while preserving core composition.
Independent tool overview
ChatGPT Images 2.5 is OpenAI’s image-generation and editing release across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI reports sharper detail, stronger reference consistency and up to 50% lower generation latency than Images 2.0. The related API offerings are GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and Sunburst, aimed at different speed and precision needs.

Overview
Images 2.5 is built around iteration. Instead of treating each prompt as a new image, a creator can bring a reference photo, ask for a visual change, and continue refining the same composition over multiple turns. OpenAI says the model is better at preserving the subject and unaffected elements while changing the requested detail. That is particularly useful for campaign variations, product imagery and personal photos where keeping identity, layout or brand cues is as important as adding something new.
The ChatGPT product also adds workflow controls around the model. Sketch lets a person draw a rough layout as a reference, templates offer starting points for common formats such as posters and merchandise, image comments target an edit, and shared prompts let others reuse an idea with their own material. OpenAI’s release examples and quoted customer reactions illustrate intent; they are not our hands-on proof. Complex text, exact logos, sensitive likenesses, typography and repeated edits should still be inspected pixel by pixel before publication.
For builders, Flare is positioned as the faster general API model, while Sunburst aims at premium work needing tighter control. The product announcement says both are available in the API and sends readers to separate API pricing. That pricing is not the same as access through a ChatGPT account. OpenAI says Images 2.5 reaches users across all ChatGPT tiers, though use limits may vary by plan. Its system card discusses prompt and image checks, C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking. These safeguards help with provenance but do not replace permission to use source images or a final editorial review.
Use cases
The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.
Develop reference-led concepts and targeted variants while preserving core composition.
Integrate image creation or edits through the Flare or Sunburst API options.
Use Sketch and templates to guide image creation without a professional design tool.
Capabilities
OpenAI says recognizable subjects, lighting and textures carry across transformations more reliably.
Change selected elements while the rest of an image is more likely to remain intact.
Refine an image through a conversation rather than restarting every creative decision.
Sketches, templates, image comments and shareable prompts support a more directed workflow.
Process
Step 1
Describe the subject, visual constraints, exact elements to preserve and intended use.
Step 2
Make one change at a time and inspect whether earlier requirements remain correct.
Step 3
Check text, identity, rights, details and output format before public use.
Cost
OpenAI says Images 2.5 is available across ChatGPT tiers; plan limits depend on the surrounding product. Flare and Sunburst have separate API billing, so no single standalone Images 2.5 subscription price applies.
Included across tiers
Images 2.5 is rolling out to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users.
Usage-based
GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and Sunburst are billed under OpenAI API pricing.

No standalone product price was presented; OpenAI says it is available across ChatGPT tiers, while API models use separate usage pricing.
They are the two GPT-Image-2.5 API variants: Flare for faster general workloads and Sunburst for more precise premium creative work.
OpenAI reports improved consistency, not perfect fidelity. Inspect the final image and retain source files for important work.
Bottom line
Images 2.5 is worth testing where a creative brief evolves through small, controlled revisions. Its reported gains in reference fidelity and iteration speed target real production pain, and the new controls reduce ambiguity. Still, generated images remain drafts until a person verifies details, permissions and provenance. Teams choosing an API model should compare accepted final assets per dollar and per minute, not merely raw generation speed.
