GitHub Spark: historical overview
GitHub Spark was GitHub's prompt-based full-stack app builder for React and TypeScript apps with managed storage, GitHub authentication, AI features, and one-click Azure deployment. GitHub stopped accepting new users and new apps on August 4, 2026 and retired the github.com Spark workbench on August 31, 2026. Existing deployed apps can continue running, but owners needed to export the code to a GitHub repository to keep editing it.

What GitHub Spark was
Spark turned a natural-language app description into a live full-stack web app, then let a builder revise it through prompts, visual controls, or code. It used an opinionated React and TypeScript stack, a managed Cosmos DB key-value store, GitHub sign-in, GitHub Models for optional AI inference, Codespaces for deeper development, and Azure Container Apps for hosting.
GitHub announced the retirement on August 4, 2026. From that day, Spark no longer accepted new users or allowed creation of new apps. Existing users had until August 31 to open each workbench and choose Create repository, which preserved the generated code and made future editing possible outside Spark.

Why this listing is historical
Spark is no longer available for new app creation, so its former subscription pricing should not be used for a purchasing decision. Before retirement, Spark was included with Copilot Pro+ and Copilot Enterprise, with AI-credit or legacy message allowances. Existing deployed apps were not charged for runtime at the final review, but GitHub applied shared request, transfer, and storage limits and could unpublish apps for the rest of a billing period when a limit was reached.
- The Spark builder is retired: new users cannot join, new apps cannot be created, and the workbench export window ended August 31, 2026.
- An app that was not exported to a repository may be difficult or impossible to maintain after workbench access ends.
- Calls to Spark's llm() helper stopped working when GitHub Models retired on July 30, 2026, even if the rest of a deployed app remains online.

Will my deployed Spark app stop working?
GitHub says apps already deployed will continue working after Spark is retired. Owners should still monitor authentication, data, quotas, and dependencies because the builder is gone and the legacy runtime can change.
How do I save a Spark app?
GitHub instructed owners to open the Spark workbench, select the three-dot menu, and choose Create repository before August 31, 2026. Check the account's repositories and contact GitHub Support if an app was not exported in time.
