Software teams using Devin
Compare SWE-2 for routine implementation and debugging inside an existing Devin workflow.
Independent tool overview
SWE-2 is a coding model from Cognition offered through Devin’s desktop and command-line tools, with web and Fusion availability rolling out.

Overview
Cognition introduced SWE-2 in September 2026 as a model trained for agentic software engineering and different reasoning-effort levels. The announcement says it is available in Devin Desktop and CLI, with a rollout to Devin Web and Fusion. Fusion can use SWE-2 as an execution partner to a larger lead model. This listing concerns the model, not the complete Devin autonomous-agent service; actual features depend on the Devin surface and account plan.
Cognition’s headline claims about benchmark scores and lower task costs come from its own evaluation choices, including internal harnesses where public results were unavailable. Those numbers are useful hypotheses, not proof the model will solve a team’s bugs more cheaply. A fair evaluation should give models the same repo access, tests, prompt quality and stop conditions, then compare merged changes, review effort, regressions and total bill. SWE-2’s value is strongest when it can handle well-bounded implementation work without many corrective turns.
Use cases
The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.
Compare SWE-2 for routine implementation and debugging inside an existing Devin workflow.
Use it for bounded repo tasks while inspecting diffs and running tests locally.
Evaluate SWE-2 as a lower-cost execution model in Fusion for work that needs a separate reviewer.
Capabilities
Cognition says its reinforcement learning targeted software-engineering tasks and cost tradeoffs.
The model is trained across reasoning-effort settings so a task can use a suitable budget.
The initial release is exposed through Cognition’s local developer surfaces.
Cognition’s Fusion workflow can pair SWE-2 with a lead model for planning and review.
The launch says Devin Web access is being rolled out rather than universally complete.
Process
Step 1
Include isolated fixes, test failures and a larger change with clear acceptance criteria.
Step 2
Measure the current assistant’s success, elapsed time, review minutes and total usage bill.
Step 3
Use a branch or worktree, scope credentials and inspect proposed commands and edits.
Step 4
Run the project checks, inspect the diff and count human corrections and regressions before adopting broadly.
Cost
SWE-2 is accessed through Devin products rather than a clearly published standalone model subscription. Cognition’s 2026 self-serve announcement lists Free, Pro, Max, Teams and Enterprise Devin plans, with usage beyond included quota billed separately. Confirm present model entitlement and usage rates in the Devin account before estimating SWE-2 cost.

Assessment
Compare
The right alternative depends on the specific output, workflow, controls and budget your project requires.

Cognition says it is available in Devin Desktop and CLI, with Devin Web and Fusion rolling out.
The launch emphasizes Devin access and does not establish a generally available standalone SWE-2 API plan.
Cognition reports favorable benchmark cost comparisons, but a team should measure total task cost and review effort on its own code.
Give it bounded tasks with known acceptance tests, then compare merged success, errors, review time and usage charges with the current workflow.
Bottom line
SWE-2 merits a trial for teams already using Devin, especially on implementation work that can be verified with tests. Treat benchmark rankings as starting points; the real decision is whether its patches reach reviewable quality at a lower total cost in your repository.
