Overview
Mu is a small, task-specific Microsoft model built for fast inference on the neural processing unit in Copilot+ PCs. Its main public deployment is the agent in Windows Settings, where it interprets requests such as making the pointer easier to see and maps them to relevant settings actions.
Microsoft uses a 330M encoder-decoder architecture, quantization, grouped-query attention, rotary positional embeddings, and NPU-specific optimization to reduce latency and power use. The company reports more than 100 tokens per second generally and more than 200 tokens per second in one Surface Laptop 7 test.
Mu is not a standalone assistant, downloadable model, or public API. Consumers encounter it as a built-in Windows feature on eligible hardware, while the operating system controls the interface, permissions, fallbacks, and ability to undo a change.
Use cases
The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.
Describe a desired outcome in ordinary language instead of knowing the exact control-panel or Settings path.
Locate settings for display, pointer, voice, focus, and other Windows usability needs more quickly.
Receive relevant Settings recommendations and navigation links for supported device issues.
Use a narrow local model to translate a request into a supported Settings function without relying on a general chatbot for every step.
Capabilities
Understands descriptive requests and surfaces the most relevant Windows setting or recommended action.
Can automate supported, undoable settings changes only after the user explicitly asks it to act.
Runs the fine-tuned Settings Mu model on the device's neural processing unit for low latency and efficient power use.
Returns standard indexed or semantic search results when the model cannot classify a request with enough confidence.
Uses quantized operations tuned across Qualcomm, AMD, and Intel Copilot+ PC silicon.
Current Windows requirements list English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese.
Process
Step 1
Use a Copilot+ PC running Windows 11 version 24H2 with the required update or a newer supported version.
Step 2
Launch Windows Settings and type a complete description of what you want into the search box.
Step 3
Check the proposed setting, target device, and navigation link, especially when the request could apply to several displays or controls.
Step 4
Explicitly ask the agent to make a supported change; it does not change settings merely because a result appeared.
Step 5
Confirm the device behaves as intended and use the offered undo path if the result is not right.
Cost
Microsoft does not sell Mu as a separate product. The Settings agent is included with supported Windows 11 updates on an eligible Copilot+ PC, so the material cost is the compatible hardware rather than a Mu subscription.
Included
Available as a Windows 11 feature on compatible Copilot+ PCs without a separate Mu plan.
Hardware purchase
Buy an eligible Windows device with the NPU and system specifications required for Copilot+ experiences.

Mu is a 330M-parameter encoder-decoder language model optimized for on-device NPU inference. Microsoft fine-tuned it to power natural-language search and supported actions in Windows Settings.
Microsoft has not released Mu as a public download, standalone application, or general developer API. Its documented consumer deployment is the agent built into Windows Settings.
Microsoft lists the feature for Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11 version 24H2 with the required update or later. Copilot+ PCs require a 40+ TOPS NPU, at least 16GB of RAM, and at least 256GB of storage.
Yes. Microsoft says Settings Mu runs locally on the Copilot+ PC's NPU to analyze the query and match it with settings already available in Windows.
It can complete supported, undoable changes only when the user explicitly requests the action. Merely entering a query produces a recommendation; it does not silently change the PC.
There is no separate Mu subscription. The feature comes through Windows on eligible Copilot+ PC hardware, so users pay for the compatible device and any normal Windows licensing associated with it.
Bottom line
Mu is a good example of where a tiny, task-specific local model beats a general chatbot: quickly mapping plain-language requests to Windows settings. It is useful for Copilot+ PC owners, but it should be understood as an embedded Windows component—not a model developers can download or a general AI product worth buying on its own.
