What Lovable (formerly GPT Engineer) is
GPT Engineer now refers to two different things. The open-source gpt-engineer command-line project still exists for developers, while the commercial gptengineer.app product was rebranded as Lovable. The company says existing projects and deployments carried over, with the domain and branding changing.
Lovable has expanded far beyond the early prompt-to-frontend experience. Users can chat to create websites and full-stack web apps, make targeted visual edits, connect backends and external services, sync code with GitHub, add payments, publish to a custom domain, and use Lovable Cloud for hosting, data, authentication, server functions, storage, and app-level AI features.
