Build responsive support or assistant interactions with bounded tools.
Independent tool overview
Gemini 3.8 Live is Google’s low-latency audio-to-audio model for real-time conversations and voice agents. It can take text, images, audio and video as input and return text and audio, with function calling and visual context. Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking is a separate model for more demanding reasoning during live sessions.

Overview
Voice interfaces succeed when conversation continues naturally through interruptions, visual context and tool work. Google positions Gemini 3.8 Live as the default model for most low-latency agent experiences. Its September release describes near-real-time visual input, automatic language transitions across 97 supported languages, and tool or API calls that can execute in the background while a conversation continues. These capabilities invite use in troubleshooting, customer support and guided workflows, but a builder still has to supply tools, permissions and safeguards around real-world actions.
The model documentation makes a useful boundary clear. Gemini 3.8 Live accepts text, image, audio and video input and outputs text and audio, but it does not generate images, support structured outputs or use file search directly. Its model code is `gemini-3.8-live` and the listed input limit is 131,072 tokens. Google’s Live API guide notes that this model uses interleaved reasoning without a configurable `thinking_level` in session setup. A developer migrating from Gemini 3.1 Flash Live needs to change the model name and revisit asynchronous tool behavior and turn handling.
For tasks involving multi-step background analysis, Google offers a different endpoint, `gemini-3.8-live-extended-thinking`, that can continue speaking intermediate updates while it reasons and calls asynchronous tools. It should not be conflated with the standard low-latency model. Google reports strong benchmark and arena performance, but those numbers come from specific setups and cannot guarantee a particular live customer experience. API pricing has a free tier with different data-use terms and metered paid rates; the listed paid standard rates include $3 per million audio input tokens and $12 per million audio output tokens. Cost and latency should be measured on complete sessions, including video frames, tool calls and interruptions.
Use cases
The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.
Build responsive support or assistant interactions with bounded tools.
Explore language switching during live conversation.
Use camera or screen context to make spoken guidance more relevant.
Capabilities
Stream spoken interaction with low-latency response design.
Use incoming image or video context within a live voice session.
Connect external actions, including asynchronous tool execution.
Google documents automatic movement among 97 supported languages mid-conversation.
Process
Step 1
Use standard Live for faster direct dialogue; evaluate Extended Thinking separately for harder tasks.
Step 2
Send only needed media, declare bounded tools and follow current turn-handling rules.
Step 3
Test interruption behavior, successful task completion, latency and session cost with real users.
Cost
Google lists free and metered paid Gemini API tiers. Paid standard pricing depends on input/output modality; a full voice session may also use video and tool-related tokens.
Free within limits
Google lists a free tier with separate data-use terms and quotas.

No. Standard Live targets lower-latency conversation; Extended Thinking is a separate model for more complex background reasoning.
Google documents image and video input for near-real-time visual context, subject to Live API implementation and cost limits.
No. The standard model documentation lists image generation as unsupported; its outputs are text and audio.
Bottom line
Gemini 3.8 Live is a strong candidate for products where voice, live visual context and tool use must work together. Its documented feature boundaries make it easier to design the right interaction and reserve Extended Thinking for genuinely complex tasks. Trial it on full conversations, not isolated prompts: measure whether users finish tasks, how interruptions feel, what tools do, and what each completed session costs under the actual modality mix.
