Overview

What Claude Haiku 5.5 is

Haiku 5.5 has a 1M-token context window, up to 128K output, adaptive thinking, and effort controls from low through max. Anthropic makes the same fixed model ID available across the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry, and Claude Platform on AWS.

The model uses a newer tokenizer that can count the same text as roughly 30% more tokens than Haiku 4.5, and thinking is on by default. Migrations need explicit testing of token budgets, sampling parameters, thinking blocks, refusals, and tool behavior.

Use cases

Who Claude Haiku 5.5 is best for

The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.

High-volume structured work

Classification, extraction, routing, chat, and other latency-sensitive workloads.

Subagent tasks

Parallel or delegated work where speed and cost matter more than maximum frontier capability.

Capabilities

Core Claude Haiku 5.5 features

1

Adaptive thinking

Thinking is enabled by default and controlled with the effort parameter.

2

Large context

Accepts up to a 1M-token context and supports large output limits.

3

Cross-cloud availability

Uses documented model IDs across Anthropic and major cloud platforms.

Process

How the Claude Haiku 5.5 workflow works

  1. Step 1

    Select the platform ID

Use the exact Haiku 5.5 identifier required by Claude API or the chosen cloud.

  2. Step 2

    Set effort and limits

Start at medium effort, choose max output carefully, and remove unsupported sampling parameters.

  3. Step 3

    Evaluate migration behavior

Recount tokens and test thinking blocks, tools, refusals, latency, and quality on representative tasks.

Cost

Claude Haiku 5.5 pricing and free plan

Anthropic lists Claude Haiku 5.5 pricing from $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Exact rates can depend on platform, context, processing, caching, and other options.

Assessment

Claude Haiku 5.5 strengths and limitations

Where it stands out

  • Very low published base rates for a model with adaptive reasoning and 1M context.
  • Designed for fast high-volume work and subagent use.

What to consider

  • The newer tokenizer can increase counted tokens relative to Haiku 4.5.
  • Thinking, sampling, refusal, and tool behavior require migration changes and fresh evals.

Compare

Bottom line

Our Claude Haiku 5.5 verdict

Claude Haiku 5.5 is a strong candidate for high-volume tasks that benefit from reasoning but cannot justify a larger model on every call. Its low rates are attractive, but tokenization and migration behavior must be measured in the actual application.
