Assumption testing
Comparing how leading models frame an ambiguous strategy, product or research question.
Independent tool overview
Model Council is Perplexity's multi-model research mode: it asks several frontier models the same question, then uses another model to synthesize where they agree, disagree and surface unique findings. On the web and iOS it runs three selectable models and is limited to Max and Enterprise Max subscribers; in Perplexity Computer it can run two to eight models, produces the individual reports as files and is available on all paid plans through usage credits. Consumer Max costs $200 per month or $2,000 per year, while Enterprise Max is $325 per seat monthly or $3,250 yearly. The feature is useful for exposing model-dependent assumptions, but agreement among related models is not independent verification. Users still need to open citations, check source quality and involve a qualified person before acting on medical, legal, financial, employment or safety conclusions.

Overview
Model Council is a Perplexity search and research feature that runs one question across multiple AI models in parallel and produces a unified synthesis.
The synthesis is organized around convergence, disagreement and findings that only one model surfaced. Each contributing response remains visible so the user can inspect what the synthesis compressed or omitted.
On the web and in the iOS app, a council always uses three models. Users can swap eligible models in the picker and toggle deeper Thinking where a model supports it.
As of this review, Perplexity lists the default web lineup as GPT-5.6 Sol with Thinking, Claude Opus 5 with Thinking and Gemini 3.1 Pro with Thinking. The company warns that the exact model list changes as providers release and retire models.
In Perplexity Computer, Model Council works differently: users choose two to eight models and an analysis depth, receive the synthesis plus each model's full report as a file, and can ask Computer to package results into a PDF, deck or spreadsheet.
Web and iOS access is included only with Max and Enterprise Max and has a monthly query cap that Perplexity does not publish as a fixed number on the help page. Computer access is available on every paid plan but consumes credits for each model and depth selected.
The iOS search mode requires app version 26.16.0 or later. Perplexity says the standalone mode is not yet available in Android or desktop apps, although Computer provides another route on paid plans.
Model diversity is useful for finding different assumptions, but the models may rely on the same popular sources, inherit similar training data or repeat the same false claim. Three agreeing outputs are not equivalent to three independent experts or primary sources.
The synthesizer is another model and can flatten minority evidence, resolve a conflict incorrectly or make the final answer sound more certain than the underlying reports justify. Review the individual outputs when the decision matters.
Consumer Free, Pro and Max accounts have AI data retention enabled by default and must turn the setting off prospectively to opt out of model-training use. Perplexity says Enterprise data is never used for training and third-party providers operate under zero-training and zero-retention agreements.
For consequential research, ask each model to state its assumptions and confidence, inspect the cited primary evidence, document unresolved disagreement and have an accountable domain expert make the final decision.
Use cases
The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.
Comparing how leading models frame an ambiguous strategy, product or research question.
Finding claims or interpretations that deserve a direct check against primary evidence.
Surfacing tradeoffs, dissent and missing considerations across several options.
Seeing whether model conclusions change when the underlying reasoning approach changes.
Using the Computer version to retain individual reports and package a reviewed synthesis into a document, deck or spreadsheet.
Capabilities
Runs the same prompt through multiple leading models instead of requiring separate manual sessions.
Uses a dedicated model to combine results and highlight agreement, disagreement and unique findings.
Lets eligible users replace models in the web picker or choose a two-to-eight-model council in Computer.
Offers deeper reasoning toggles for supported models in the web search mode.
Keeps contributing answers visible; Computer returns each full model report as a separate file.
Computer users can request anything from brief insight to a more detailed report.
Computer can turn the reviewed synthesis into a PDF, presentation or spreadsheet.
Available as a search mode on web and recent iOS versions, and as a skill in Perplexity Computer.
Process
Step 1
State the exact question, timeframe, jurisdiction, constraints and decision standard so models are not solving different problems.
Step 2
Remove personal, confidential, regulated and privileged material unless the approved plan, retention settings and contracts cover it.
Step 3
Select a lineup with relevant strengths and remember that brand diversity does not guarantee independent evidence.
Step 4
Require each model to separate facts, inferences, unknowns, confidence and the evidence that could change its conclusion.
Step 5
Open each contribution instead of relying only on the synthesized answer, especially when one model raises a unique risk.
Step 6
Open the sources, prefer primary and current evidence, verify quotations and confirm that each citation supports the adjacent claim.
Step 7
Use authoritative databases, official documents, calculations or a qualified expert rather than treating model consensus as proof.
Step 8
Preserve disagreements, missing data, model versions and the date so a polished synthesis does not erase the evidence trail.
Step 9
Have a qualified person approve any medical, legal, financial, employment, safety or similarly consequential conclusion.
Step 10
Track the monthly web allowance or Computer credits; more models and deeper reports increase consumption.
Cost
Model Council is not sold as a standalone subscription. On web and iOS it is included with consumer Max at $200/month or $2,000/year and Enterprise Max at $325 per seat/month or $3,250/year, subject to a monthly Model Council query cap. It is not available there on Free, Pro, Education Pro or Enterprise Pro. In Perplexity Computer, the council is available on all paid plans and uses Computer credits rather than the web query allowance. Perplexity currently equates 100 credits to $1, but says credit rates, task costs and plan allowances can change; every additional council model increases consumption. Pricing and availability were checked August 31, 2026.

Assessment
Compare
The right alternative depends on the specific output, workflow, controls and budget your project requires.
Data Analysis
Better for ordinary cited search and research when one Perplexity answer is sufficient and Max-only council access is unnecessary.
Explore Perplexity →Agents
Better for long-running work that must research, calculate and create files, with Model Council available as one optional skill.
Explore Perplexity Computer →Consumer
Better when the goal is a long-running Google research agent rather than comparing several model perspectives.
Explore Gemini Deep Research Agent →Educators
Better for questions centered on academic literature and evidence drawn from research papers.
Explore ResearchGPT (now Consensus) →Questions
It is a research mode that runs one question through several AI models, then synthesizes where the outputs agree, disagree and contribute unique findings.
The web and iOS search mode always uses three selectable models. The Perplexity Computer version supports two to eight.
As of August 31, 2026, Perplexity lists GPT-5.6 Sol with Thinking, Claude Opus 5 with Thinking and Gemini 3.1 Pro with Thinking as the default set. Eligible models can be swapped, and the lineup will change over time.
Not as a standalone web or iOS search mode. Pro users can run it as a Perplexity Computer skill, where it consumes credits.
Web and iOS access is included with consumer Max at $200/month or $2,000/year and Enterprise Max at $325 per seat/month or $3,250/year. Computer access uses variable credits on paid plans.
Yes. Web and iOS have a monthly query cap, while Computer runs consume credits based partly on model count and depth. Perplexity does not publish one fixed web cap on the current help page.
It is available in the iOS app from version 26.16.0. Perplexity says it is not yet a standalone mode in Android or desktop apps as of this review.
No. Models can share sources and failure modes. Treat consensus as a signal for investigation, then verify the cited primary evidence independently.
It can help surface questions and competing assumptions, but it should not make the decision. Verify current authoritative sources and use a qualified professional who remains accountable for the conclusion.
Perplexity says AI data retention is enabled by default for Free, Pro and Max users. Consumers can turn it off prospectively; Enterprise data is not used for model training.
Web and iOS use three models and return a synthesis in the thread under a monthly allowance. Computer uses two to eight models, charges credits and returns the synthesis plus full model reports that can become files or presentations.
Bottom line
Model Council is valuable when the real question is not merely 'what is the answer?' but 'which assumptions change the answer, and where should I verify next?' It makes model comparison legible and the Computer version preserves a better audit trail than a single synthesis. Its main danger is epistemic theater: several polished model outputs and one polished consensus can still rest on the same weak evidence. The high Max price also makes the standalone mode hard to justify for casual research. Use it for hypothesis generation, dissent discovery and structured cross-checking, then open the sources and put an accountable human expert between the council and any consequential action.
