Multi-channel content
Reuse one governed content model across websites, native apps, commerce, displays, and other digital experiences.
Independent tool overview
Contentful is a hosted headless content platform that lets teams model reusable structured content, edit and govern it in a web app, and deliver published or preview content to websites, apps, and other channels through REST and GraphQL APIs.

Overview
Contentful separates content from presentation. Editors work with structured entries, assets, references, locales, validations, schedules, comments, and workflows, while developers choose the frontend framework and retrieve content through delivery, preview, management, image, sync, or GraphQL APIs. That makes the same product, article, location, or campaign content reusable across websites, apps, kiosks, and other channels.
It is not a turnkey website builder: teams still need content architecture, frontend development, preview integration, deployments, analytics, redirects, SEO rendering, accessibility, and operational ownership. AI Actions can translate, rewrite, review, and generate metadata inside governed workflows, but they are Enterprise-only and separately metered. The biggest buying trap is pricing architecture—Lite costs $300 per month, yet a larger Lite Space is a separate $850-per-month add-on.
Use cases
The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.
Reuse one governed content model across websites, native apps, commerce, displays, and other digital experiences.
Pair structured content with a custom Next.js, React, mobile, or other frontend and an independent deployment pipeline.
Maintain locale variants, fallback chains, and plan-dependent localized workflows for regional content teams.
Model products, articles, locations, authors, campaigns, FAQs, and relationships instead of storing everything in page blobs.
Use roles, comments, tasks, schedules, releases, workflows, governance, and Enterprise controls to coordinate publishing.
Connect commerce, DAM, CRM, personalization, analytics, search, and custom apps around a central content system.
Capabilities
Defines reusable content types, fields, validations, references, and metadata independent of page presentation.
Gives editors a hosted web interface for content, media, rich text, Markdown, images, comments, and tasks.
Serves published content through a read-only CDN-backed API for applications and websites.
Generates a GraphQL schema from the content model for typed, field-specific queries.
Returns unpublished content so teams can implement staging and in-context previews before release.
Creates and updates entries, models, assets, locales, releases, and configuration programmatically.
Supports isolated model and content changes for development, QA, staging, and controlled promotion.
Stores field-level locale values and configurable fallback relationships within each environment.
Coordinates publication timing and grouped content changes, with availability and depth varying by plan.
Controls users, roles, teams, permissions, tokens, and publishing access at organization and space levels.
Extends the editor and triggers external workflows through marketplace apps, custom apps, and event callbacks.
Optional products add visual experience composition, experimentation, segmentation, and personalized delivery.
Enterprise add-on provides templates and custom prompts for translation, rewrite, grammar, tone, alt text, SEO metadata, and product copy.
Combines triggers, conditions, loops, entry actions, AI Actions, apps, and review-state transitions.
Provides developer tooling for structured content operations, automation, migrations, and AI-assisted workflows.
Process
Step 1
List every destination, content type, locale, owner, lifecycle, search need, and compliance requirement before modeling.
Step 2
Create reusable types and references around real entities rather than cloning the current website's visual sections into brittle fields.
Step 3
Assign owners, roles, validation, workflow states, publishing rights, retention, localization, and emergency rollback responsibilities.
Step 4
Develop and test model migrations in a sandbox environment, use aliases for controlled promotion, and preserve a rollback path.
Step 5
Connect the Preview API and frontend so editors can inspect unpublished content in its real layout before production publishing.
Step 6
Generate types, handle references and locales, render metadata and structured data, validate accessibility, and define missing-content behavior.
Step 7
Keep management tokens server-side, scope delivery and preview keys by environment, rotate them, and never expose write-capable credentials to the browser.
Step 8
Import content through repeatable scripts, preserve identifiers and redirects, compare counts and relationships, and obtain editorial sign-off.
Step 9
Use narrow AI Actions with approved context, role permissions, field validation, usage budgets, provenance, and native-speaker or specialist review.
Step 10
Track API rate and error behavior, cache hit rates, webhooks, failed publishes, preview drift, content quality, quota use, and frontend performance.
Cost
Contentful Platform has Free, Lite, and custom Enterprise plans. Free is $0 with one Starter Space and hard caps. Lite is $300 per month and raises users, roles, locales, API calls, bandwidth, and editorial collaboration, but still includes only a Starter Space; one larger Lite Space may be purchased for another $850 per month. Lite overages are $5 per additional 1 million API calls and $0.15 per extra GB of asset bandwidth. Enterprise, Premium Spaces, Studio, Personalization, and AI Actions are custom or separately priced. AI Actions include annual consumption units with pay-as-you-go or prepaid overage arrangements.
$0 forever
Learning and exploration plan with one Starter Space and hard usage caps.
$300/month
Small-business plan for one project with more editorial collaboration and usage.
+$850/month
Optional larger project space available to Lite customers in addition to the base plan.
Custom
Scaled content platform with custom capacity, security, governance, infrastructure, support, and space architecture.

Contentful is a hosted headless CMS and composable content platform. Teams model and edit structured content in Contentful, then custom websites and apps retrieve it through APIs.
Not by itself. It manages content and offers optional Studio tooling, but a development team normally builds, deploys, and maintains the frontend, preview, SEO, analytics, and integrations.
Yes. The Free plan is $0 forever with 10 users, two roles, two locales, 100,000 monthly API calls, 50 GB monthly CDN bandwidth, and one capped Starter Space.
Lite is $300 per month. It still includes a Starter Space; the optional larger Lite Space is another $850 per month, making the published combined base $1,150 per month before overages.
A Space is a project container for content types, entries, assets, locales, environments, API keys, roles, and related settings. Space type and count materially affect pricing and architecture.
Core options include the REST Content Delivery, Content Preview, Content Management, Images, and Sync APIs plus the GraphQL Content API. Each has a different read, preview, transformation, or write purpose.
Yes. Locales are configured per environment, fields can carry localized values, APIs can request a locale, and fallback relationships can be configured. Editorial completeness still needs clear governance.
AI Actions are Enterprise-only templates and custom workflows for translation, rewrite, review, grammar, tone, alt text, SEO metadata, and other content transformations inside Contentful.
Contentful's current AI FAQ says it does not use organization data to train the models supporting AI Actions. Buyers should still review the AI terms, chosen provider, retention, residency, and service order.
A small team that wants a finished brochure site without ongoing developers may be better served by a hosted visual website builder. Contentful is strongest when structured reuse and custom delivery justify the engineering and governance cost.
Bottom line
Contentful is a strong choice when structured content must serve multiple custom experiences and the organization can fund both engineering and editorial governance. Its APIs, modeling, localization, preview, and environment concepts are mature. Small teams should price the complete system carefully: Lite's headline price excludes the larger Lite Space, and the frontend, migration, integrations, and operations often cost more than the CMS subscription.
