What Bytebot was

Bytebot gave an AI agent its own Ubuntu desktop so it could work across Firefox, email, office files, VS Code, the terminal, and other Linux applications. Users described tasks in natural language, watched the agent act through the interface, and could take over when it needed help.

The project supported Docker Compose, Railway, and Kubernetes deployments and accepted Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google model keys. The official Bytebot repository became read-only in March 2026, so the software remains available as source code but is no longer an actively maintained product.

Past capabilities

What Bytebot offered

Full virtual desktop

Ran a browser, file system, email client, code editor, terminal, and installable Linux applications inside an isolated container.

Autonomous and takeover modes

Allowed the agent to run a task independently while retaining a path for a human to take control and then resume automation.

Bring-your-own model

Supported API keys for Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, and Google Gemini rather than tying the desktop to a single model provider.

Programmatic control

Exposed task and desktop APIs plus MCP support for integrating agent work with other systems.

Availability

Why this listing is historical

Bytebot's source code remains available without a software subscription, but the official project is no longer maintained. A self-hosted fork still incurs infrastructure, model API, storage, monitoring, and engineering costs.

  • The official repository is archived and no longer receives upstream maintenance
  • The existing website and documentation describe the former product and should not be treated as a current support commitment
  • Desktop agents can make destructive or irreversible clicks, so sensitive workflows require isolation, least privilege, approval gates, and audit logs

Questions

Bytebot FAQs

Is Bytebot still maintained?

No. The owner archived Bytebot's official GitHub repository on March 7, 2026, making it read-only.

Can I still use Bytebot?

The Apache-2.0 source code remains available and can be forked, but adopters must maintain, secure, and operate it themselves. It should not be deployed unchanged as if it were actively supported.

What did Bytebot do?

Bytebot ran an AI agent inside a containerized Linux desktop and let it click, type, browse, process files, use installed applications, and complete multi-step computer tasks.
