Overview

What BigQuery is

BigQuery can keep large structured and unstructured datasets in the same governed analytics environment used for model calls. Teams can create remote model objects, invoke generation functions in queries, and combine outputs with normal SQL transformations.

The platform is powerful but cost-sensitive. Query bytes, reserved capacity, storage, model inference, and connected services can all affect spend, so production use needs quotas, evaluation, and careful review of which columns are sent to a model.

Use cases

Who BigQuery is best for

The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.

Google Cloud data teams

Fits organizations already using BigQuery for analytics and IAM-controlled datasets.

Batch AI enrichment

Useful for classification, summarization, extraction, or generation across rows without building a separate data mover.

Capabilities

Core BigQuery features

1

AI.GENERATE_TEXT

Generates text through a BigQuery remote model using supported foundation models.

2

BigQuery ML

Builds or uses machine-learning models from SQL alongside warehouse data.

3

Serverless analytics

Allocates query compute without requiring users to manage individual database servers.

Process

How the BigQuery workflow works

  1. Step 1

    Select and govern the data

Choose the minimum needed columns and confirm IAM, region, and data-use requirements.

  2. Step 2

    Create a model connection

Configure the BigQuery connection and remote model or BigQuery ML model.

  3. Step 3

    Run and evaluate SQL

Call the model function, measure quality and cost, then persist only reviewed outputs.

Cost

BigQuery pricing and free plan

BigQuery prices query compute and storage separately; AI and BigQuery ML operations can add service-specific charges.

Usage-based BigQuery pricing

Free tier plus compute, storage, and AI usage

BigQuery prices query compute and storage separately; AI and BigQuery ML operations can add service-specific charges.

  • First 1 TiB of on-demand query processing per month is listed as free
  • On-demand and capacity compute models are available
  • Model inference and connected services can be billed separately

Assessment

BigQuery strengths and limitations

Where it stands out

  • Runs AI enrichment close to large governed datasets.
  • Lets data teams combine model calls with familiar SQL and warehouse operations.

What to consider

  • A broad query or repeated model call can create significant cost.
  • Remote-model setup, IAM, region support, and data-governance requirements add operational complexity.

Compare

Questions

BigQuery FAQs

Is BigQuery an AI tool?

BigQuery is an AI-capable data platform. BigQuery ML and AI SQL functions provide native paths to train, connect, and invoke models.

What is BigQuery best used for in an AI workflow?

Use it to select governed warehouse data, invoke a model from SQL, then evaluate and store reviewed results at batch scale.

How much does BigQuery cost?

BigQuery prices query compute and storage separately; AI and BigQuery ML operations can add service-specific charges.

Bottom line

Our BigQuery verdict

BigQuery is a strong choice when AI enrichment belongs inside an existing Google Cloud analytics workflow. A dedicated application database may be simpler for low-latency product features.
