Overview
scite indexes scholarly literature and builds Smart Citations that show how a paper is discussed by citing articles. Its Assistant can answer literature questions with supporting references, while search, article reports, collections and alerts support deeper review. The value is seeing the context of a citation instead of relying on a raw citation count or an isolated abstract.
Citation labels are signals to inspect, not a vote on scientific truth. Coverage depends on indexed documents and accessible full text; a paper with few classified citations is not necessarily weak. Researchers should read primary studies, methods and later critiques before relying on any summary. For an evidence review, record search terms and inclusion rules so missing papers are visible, and compare study design rather than simply adding up supporting and contrasting citation counts. scite is a research aid, not a peer reviewer or a substitute for domain expertise.

It shows how a later article cites a paper, including the citation context and scite’s classification of its relationship.
The current pricing page advertises a seven-day trial for paid plans; it does not present an unrestricted permanent free plan.
The Pro plan lists API access, with usage terms and credits on the current pricing page.
No. Citation context helps identify discussion and criticism; quality still depends on reading the study, methods and broader evidence.
Bottom line
scite is most useful when the question is what later research says about a specific paper or claim. It can accelerate triage and reveal contrary evidence, but a rigorous review still needs primary-source reading, transparent search criteria and expert judgment.
