Overview

What Mastra is

Mastra is a TypeScript framework for building AI agents and applications. Developers define models, instructions, tools, memory and typed workflows in code, run them locally through a server and Studio, and deploy to their chosen environment. Its current site also emphasizes tracing, metrics, evaluations and long-running agent workflows.

The open-source framework is separate from Mastra Platform hosting and observability. That distinction matters for cost and architecture: developers can self-host the framework, while managed services meter CPU time, traces, storage and model-gateway use. The framework gives structure to a program, but your team still designs tool permissions, retry behavior, data retention, model selection and evaluation criteria.

Use cases

Who Mastra is best for

The strongest fit depends on the job you need the product to complete, not the size of its feature list.

TypeScript developers

Define agents, tools and workflows in a codebase with typed interfaces and version control.

Teams running long tasks

Build multi-step processes with persistence, retries and observability rather than one chat completion.

AI product teams

Evaluate model outputs and inspect traces while moving from local development to hosted operation.

Capabilities

Core Mastra features

1

Agent definitions

Configure instructions, models and tool access as TypeScript modules.

2

Typed workflows

Compose steps, branches and retries into explicit control flow.

3

Memory

Store thread context and support recall patterns for stateful agents.

4

Studio and server

Test locally in Studio and expose agents and workflows through a server.

5

Observability and evaluation

Trace runs, review logs and metrics, and score behavior against datasets.

Process

How the Mastra workflow works

  1. Step 1

    Scaffold a project

Create a TypeScript Mastra app and choose the model provider for one agent.

  2. Step 2

    Define tools and steps

Give the agent the minimum required tools and put high-impact actions behind explicit workflow controls.

  3. Step 3

    Test locally

Use Studio and evaluation cases for expected tasks, wrong inputs, failures and long-running states.

  4. Step 4

    Deploy and monitor

Choose self-hosted or Mastra Platform, then monitor traces, CPU, model usage and data retention.

Cost

Mastra pricing and free plan

The framework is free to self-host. Mastra Platform has a $0 Starter tier, a $250/month Teams tier and custom Enterprise pricing; usage beyond included CPU and observability allowances can be charged separately.

Assessment

Mastra strengths and limitations

Where it stands out

  • TypeScript code and typed workflows make agent behavior reviewable in normal engineering practice.
  • Open-source and managed paths let teams choose where to run the application.
  • Built-in Studio and observability tools support debugging beyond prompt trial-and-error.

What to consider

  • Even the free platform tier has usage-based overage and separately priced model calls.
  • Framework adoption requires engineering work for tool security, persistence and production operations.
  • Complex agent workflows can be difficult to evaluate without representative datasets and failure cases.

Compare

Mastra alternatives

The right alternative depends on the specific output, workflow, controls and budget your project requires.

Questions

Mastra FAQs

Is Mastra free?

The open-source framework is free to use under Apache 2.0. Its hosted platform starts at $0 with usage allowances and overage.

What language does Mastra use?

It is built for TypeScript and JavaScript applications.

Does Mastra include hosting?

Its optional Platform provides managed deployment and observability, while the framework can be hosted elsewhere.

What should a team test before deployment?

Evaluate tool permissions, step failures, retries, memory behavior, model cost and whether the answers meet real task criteria.

Bottom line

Our Mastra verdict

Mastra fits TypeScript teams that want to own agent logic in code while using integrated workflow and evaluation primitives. Compare managed metering with a self-hosted deployment using one representative workload and its traces.
