The Rundown: Elon Musk just announced the creation of his new AI company, xAI, to “understand the true nature of the universe.”
What we know:
The team has experience at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto
Advised by Dan Hendrycks, who serves as director of the Center for AI Safety
xAI is a separate company from X Corp, but will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission
You can meet the team/ask questions on a Twitter spaces chat on Friday, July 14th @xAI
Why it matters: The launch of xAI contradicts Musk’s recent statements about pausing AI development to avoid "civilization destruction." Regardless, xAI has a roster of brilliant people, and we’ll be watching the development closely.

The Rundown: Google's AI-backed note-taking tool, previously known as Project Tailwind, has been rebranded to NotebookLM and is launching to a select group of users in the US today.
Details:
Google is trying to give users their own personal AI, trained on their data and notes
Beginning in Google Docs, users can select multiple documents and ask questions or create new content through the app
Features include the automatic summarization of long documents and the conversion of video outlines into scripts
Citations are integrated. However, Google acknowledges that the model might currently produce incorrect results
NotebookLM is accessible via a waitlist on Google Labs
Why it matters: Google is pushing AI hard. The tool could potentially reshape the future of Google Drive, similar to how the Search Generative Experience feature could potentially change Google Search.
