The Rundown: AI pioneer and former Google Brain researcher Geoffrey Hinton said during an interview with 60 Minutes that today's systems may soon surpass human intelligence — with the potential to take over if we don't act quickly.
The details:
Hinton said he believes AI like chatbots truly do understand and reason — despite claims that the technology just predicts words.
He also thinks AI could reason better than humans in five years, which could lead to manipulating people or "taking over".
Hinton reiterated that while AI can and will bring enormous health benefits, the risks include unemployment, bias, fake news and even battlefield robots.
The relevance: This isn’t Hinton’s first warning — and his words (especially to the large ‘mainstream’ audience on 60 Minutes) carry serious weight that can shape both sentiment and future policy. The question remains — can we put the genie back in the bottle, even if we wanted to?
