The Rundown: Chinese tech giant Baidu just revealed its latest AI model Ernie 4.0, making the bold claim that it matches the capabilities of leading models like GPT-4.
The details:
In live demos, Ernie 4.0 followed complex verbal instructions, applied logic, and generated lengthy creative content on request.
Baidu claims Ernie’s comprehension, reasoning, memory, and content abilities are on par with models like GPT-4 and Google's LaMDA.
Baidu plans to incorporate Ernie 4.0 into search, maps, cloud services, and other products to transform experiences.
The relevance: The competition is heating up between the U.S. and China — along with new sanctions and global tensions. But with 4.0 unavailable to the public, verifying the bold claims of Baidu matching GPT-4 will be challenging.

The Rundown: Robotics startup Figure shared a new video of its humanoid ‘Figure 01’ robot walking dynamically and independently, marking a key milestone in development.
The details:
The footage shows the over 6-foot tall robot taking slow, bent-knee steps without support across a room.
The robot has highly dexterous, five-fingered human-like hands, though grip isn't proven fully functional yet.
Figure announced a $70M funding round in May, and has grown to 60 employees over the last 12 months.
Our thoughts: Figure taking their concepts from renders to functionality in 12 months is impressive — and a clear sign that humanoid robots are inching closer to reality.

Inflection’s personal AI chatbot Pi now has access to information on the web, enabling more fluid and engaging conversations on up-to-date topics. Unlike other LLMs like Bard and GPT, Pi does not browse directly for the user — simply using the access for context within responses.
The AI coding boom claims more victims. On the heels of yesterday’s LinkedIn cuts, Stack Overflow also announced layoffs of over 100 employees after doubling staff last year. The cuts target sales and support teams, as generative AI continues to squeeze the site's core business.
