🤖 AI Pope Francis

AI-generated images have gone viral before, but a recent picture of the pope wearing a swagged-out puffy jacket has blown up the internet.

The image, first posted on this subreddit for Midjourney, spread rapidly on social media platforms as a meme before being debunked.

The image is definitely fake, and there are important tells:

  • Somebody posted it alongside three alternatives on the Midjourney subreddit.

  • Details such as a hand not quite grasping the coffee cup, a crucifix with improper angles, and the edge of a glasses lens transitioning into its own shadow indicate AI generation.

Despite telltale signs of AI generation to us AI enthusiasts, 99% of the world thought this image was real.

The bottom line: Reality and simulation are likely to blur further as AI technology evolves, raising both concerns and fascination.

Regardless, you must admit the pope has some swag in that white puffer.

🍎 Apple Acquires AI Startup

Apple is silently making moves in the AI scene and recently acquired WaveOne, a startup specializing in AI-based video compression algorithms.

Key points about WaveOne:

  • Founded in 2016 by Lubomir Bourdev and Oren Rippel

  • Developed "content-aware" video compression and decompression algorithm

  • Technology leverages AI-powered scene and object detection

  • Claims to reduce video file sizes by up to 50% and more in complex scenes

  • $9 million in funding from investors before Apple acquisition

This acquisition could help Apple make streaming more efficient for services like Apple TV+.

Other tech giants, such as Google, have already incorporated AI into video compression, resulting in a 4% reduction in YouTube's data usage. Apple might be planning to introduce something similar with the help of WaveOne.

⚡️ Zoom Releases Zoom IQ

Zoom just announced its partnership with OpenAI to enhance Zoom IQ, their AI-powered assistant. Here's the rundown of Zoom IQ's capabilities:

  • Summarizing missed meeting content and answering follow-up questions

  • Generating whiteboards based on text prompts

  • Providing recaps of meetings and summarizing threads in Zoom Team Chat

  • Generating AI-powered responses to colleagues, similar to ChatGPT in Slack

Starting in April, these features will roll out by invitation only, with select meeting summary capabilities made more broadly available.

Zoom is working hard to stay relevant while their main competitors, Google and Microsoft, race to develop the most powerful AI technologies.
