SHOPIFY

The Rundown: Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke just revealed Shopify's AI vision and new commerce-specific AI digital assistant, Sidekick.

Key points:

  • Enhances productivity and optimizes workflows, facilitating more time for business growth rather than operational tasks

  • Understands and interprets questions or prompts, so users can generate new ideas in seconds

  • Ask clarifying questions or prompt Sidekick to shorten, rewrite, or give feedback

  • Lütke strongly believes that people building businesses have the most to gain from AI technology

  • No official release date has been shared

Why it matters: The age of AI-powered businesses is emerging, and Shopify is paving the way.

TOGETHER WITH INNOVATING WITH AI

The Rundown: A lack of coding skills shouldn’t stop you from launching your own products. All you need is the right tools and technology.

Innovating with AI created a free cheat sheet to help you speedrun the entire process.

You’ll learn the following:

  • Tools to launch AI-powered apps without code to quickly launch and validate ideas

  • How to use low-code AI to communicate flawlessly with software developers

  • How to connect existing business workflows to powerful AI models, without a single line of code

XAI

The Rundown: Elon Musk just announced the creation of his new AI company, xAI, to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

What we know:

  • The team has experience at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto

  • Advised by Dan Hendrycks, who serves as director of the Center for AI Safety

  • xAI is a separate company from X Corp, but will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission

  • You can meet the team/ask questions on a Twitter spaces chat on Friday, July 14th @xAI

Why it matters: The launch of xAI contradicts Musk’s recent statements about pausing AI development to avoid "civilization destruction." Regardless, xAI has a roster of brilliant people, and we’ll be watching the development closely.

GOOGLE

The Rundown: Google's AI-backed note-taking tool, previously known as Project Tailwind, has been rebranded to NotebookLM and is launching to a select group of users in the US today.

Details:

  • Google is trying to give users their own personal AI, trained on their data and notes

  • Beginning in Google Docs, users can select multiple documents and ask questions or create new content through the app

  • Features include the automatic summarization of long documents and the conversion of video outlines into scripts

  • Citations are integrated. However, Google acknowledges that the model might currently produce incorrect results

  • NotebookLM is accessible via a waitlist on Google Labs

Why it matters: Google is pushing AI hard. The tool could potentially reshape the future of Google Drive, similar to how the Search Generative Experience feature could potentially change Google Search.
